Steel Ring 200

A supported or self-supported adventure

13 – 16 May 2027, Sheffield, South Yorkshire

What is the Steel Ring 200?

This is a 210 mile MTB/Gravel route that orbits the city of Sheffield in an anti-clockwise direction. It begins in the Sherwood Forest area and heads roughly north, before turning west and then south into the Eastern Peaks. The route then meanders around the White Peak before finishing near Mansfield. It has been created with the purpose of linking some classic off-road riding spots this area offers. For 2027, we are hosting a four day supported event alongside a self-supported bikepacking adventure.

Riding through North Nottinghamshire, South Yorkshire and Derbyshire, the many highlights will include some of the best off-road biking trails found in England.

You will encounter a huge array of trail gems over the 200+ mile distance, taking in bridleways, byways, singletrack, moorland, woodland, urban and some purpose-built MTB trails.

Not only is the riding superb, the views from the likes of the Eastern Peaks and the Derbyshire Dales are fantastic too.

The events start in North Nottinghamshire and initially head into the large expanses of Sherwood Forest before continuing north towards Doncaster using a mix of bridleways and byways. The route then turns west to traverse the north of the Steel City via the excellent riding area’s of Greno and Wharncliffe woods – where many of the UK’s Downhill stars honed their skills!

Then it’s onto the classic gritstone trails of the Eastern Peaks area renowned for it’s superb technical riding, alongside the stunning panoramic views. There are some big climbs and descents in this area with many moorland sections above 400m.

Then further south, you’ll be onto the Limestone trails of the White Peak. A large section of the Derbyshire Dales is utilised on a huge variety of rolling trails before heading back east to end this fantastic loop.

There are many surprises on this route, ranging from superb technical singletrack, great architecture and a fascinating history.

FAQ’s

– How hard is this event?
The 210 mile distance and the 16,500ft of elevation gain is a big challenge on its own. With a large part of the route being off-road and with plenty of opportunities to test your skills, together will make this event a pretty tough ride for most.

– What type of bike do I need?
A short travel mountain bike, either hardtail or full suspension would be ideal. A gravel bike shod with the biggest possible tyres could also be suitable, though some of the numerous descents and gnarly sections will push your bike and your skills to the limit! Whatever your choice, your bike will need some decent off-road tyres and be in good working order.

– When and Where do the events start and finish?
The events start and finish near the town of Mansfield (exact location to be determined). The supported event starts at 9am* on Thursday 13th May whilst  the unsupported bikepacking event will start on Saturday 15th May. Both events officially finish on Sunday 16th May, (* times subject to confirmation).

– How will I get to and from the start/finish?
We recognise a lot of people will not be local to the event and need to travel. We strongly encourage people to get the train or car share to minimise the impact of the event. The area has good rail links from all over the UK.

– Where will I park?
There will be ample parking at the start/finish venue. Details will be released a bit nearer the time.

– Can I enter on the day?
No, entries will close 10 days before the events start.

– Will event run in bad weather?
Yes, for example if part of the route is flooded, a diversion will be in force.

– I’m planning on arriving the night before, is there anywhere to camp/stay?
We are currently arranging somewhere for self-sufficient campervans, although there’s plenty of hotel/B&B/campsite accommodation to be found in the North Notts area. Pre & post event camping details will be released later.
